1989 Johnson 50 Warning Horn test Results.

Hey Fellas,

1989 Johnson 50 Model J50TLCEC.

Well i got a shop manual in over the weekend and figured i would go thru some things. Well it turns out my warning horn did not work at all. After locating it i removed it and i was getting 12vDC constant on the wires. So i went down to radio shack and got a 12vDC buzzer hooked it up, and as soon as i turn the key on the buzzer comes on. I troubleshot the tan wire and when i dissconnect the oil reservoir tank and the 3 pin connector going to the VRO pump the buzzer finally stops. I connected the oil reservoir tank back up and removed the pickup assembly this is when i got confused on how this contraption works. I sure could use someone who is familier with this to help me out. The manual is pretty vague on the low oil warning signal. Also the 3 pin connector going to VRO pump is signaling horn. Is their any input on this as well.

Thanks,
Mike

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

2005 Johnson 40 hp 2 stroke-NO POWER?

Hello- I just tried to go on a 5 day fisihng trip but had to come home because my motor would not run! So here I am asking for some help before heading out to the dealer. My motor is a 2005 Johnson 2 stroke with not 5 hours running time on it.I bought it BN as a leftover and it ran excellent last Fall before putting it away.I did run it out of gas and oiled the cylinders.I started it up in my driveway with the muffs and it idles fine but when I tried to push the throttle forward it started sputtering and would not go above 2000 rpms.I changed the plugs, ( 2 BN plugs) and it seemed better. So off I went. Got to the lake and launched the boat and it started right up, idled perfectly and as I got out of the harbor, I pushed the lever forward and no power at all.I pulled the lever back and it idled great.I go back to the dock, change tanks as both have new gas in them.No luck again. Back to the dock, take the plastic cover off the front of the carbs, no mice nests, bees nests.Out of the harbor once again and no power again.I can see gas spurting past the 2 butterflys but no poer again. I push in the key yo engage the choke and it starts to gain some power and rpms but only for a second or 2 and then same thing, no power.I idles back to the harbor, put it on the trailer and home here I am.Can anyone help me out with this? Shame to as the warranty just ran out over the Winter.

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

2006 Johnson 150 Warning Horn no oil alarm

I have been chasing this problem for a year, First while it was under warranty the dealer looked at it and put a new lube pump cluster in and it went away for a long time but now it back. Heres what I have done to check the system out. Pulled the fuel line from the fuel tank to the engine and replaced it from end to end. I pulled the stand pipe out of the tank and inspected for clogging and contamination, there was none. I bypassed the water separator with no help at all. I would like to hear a few new ideas on were to go next. One more thing if you pump the fuel bulb it will work fine for a little while and then it will come back, its like it starved for fuel.

Mike

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

Advice on prop for 1999 Johnson 150?

I have a 20' powercat with twin johnson 150's. It weighs around 2k lbs.
I bought the boat with one aluminum and one SST prop, and two different sizes.

The AL prop is a 13 1/2 X 19 and the SST is 13 3/4X19. I am getting around 5000 rpm on the AL prop and 5200 with the SST prop when running both motors wide open at a max of 56MPH.

I'd like to get a new pair of stainless props that will give me good performance in the 3000 RPM range which is where I run most.

Michigan Wheel is telling me I need a 14 1/4 X 21. That seem too big to me.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated... Thanks!!

Forum: Propeller Information

1992 Evinrude 48 Throttle Stop?

All:

My neighbor has a pontoon boat with a 1992 Evinrude 48. It idles, starts, and runs perfectly. When you push the throttle down hard, the boat starts to accelerate nicely and revs build as they should, but it never seems to come close to hitting WOT. The throttle lever itself is not down to horizontal.

Do these boats have some sort of throttle stop or limiter on them? It's a pontoon so it has no gauges (no tach, etc) but I'd guess it maybe is turning 3500 RPM - nowhere near it's intended redline.

It appears to have the factory prop on it - not sure the pitch. No damage to it. The hull is free of growth, etc. It is a 23' pontoon, so I don't expect it to set any speed records, but it just seems like it's not getting to WOT.

Any help/info would be appreciated.

      -- Mike

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair
