2000 Johnson 50, is it overcharging?

I have a new to me 2000 Johnson 50. It is checking 14.75 volts at the battery when its running. This is my first Johnson & I wasnt sure if it was normal for them to run a little high or not. What led me to this was searching for the reason my tach isnt working. I searched the other tach threads & checked a few things. The gray wire reads zero with the switch on & engine off & peaks at about 6 volts at idle. When I bought the boat the cranking battery was wired parallel with the trolling battery. I disconnected them & when I was testing the trolling battery I found a short in the trolling motor plug receptacle. This leads me to believe that the engine electricals may have been subjected to this short at some point. The depth finder that was also connected in this circuit has a melted transducer. Not sure if it would matter but figured all the details I know couldnt hurt. Where should I start checking from here?

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

1984 Johnson 115hp Melted Piston (pics)

1984 Johnson 115hp
Okay so I just had this motor serviced rebuilt carbs, new spark plugs and wires, new impeller rebuilt water pump, compression was good and new gear oil. today after running hour and half some mins after all this work running at 5600rpm 25-28 water pressure the motor droped from 5600rpm to 2700rpm WOT and died, motor cranked back up but would only do 2700rpm-4100rpm with a strange knock so it was less than a mile from my house dock to get it home maybe 7 mins back at that rpm. you will see what the knock was, i can rebuild this motor i have rebuilt a car motor so with the pics and as far as i have gotten into it i would like to have any info on what anyone thinks, that would have leaned only one piston out and not the other one, being i have never worked on a 2cycle boat motor is there anything special i need to look at as the source of this injury. I have never heard of the top of a piston melting with such little damage and what would cause that, here are all the pics i have. also that is the only piston with damage i check the other three.

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

91 48 SPL throttle ?

When I start up the motor and use the manual throttle it revs up just fine. When I put it in reverse it revs up just fine and travels at normal speed. BUT when I put it in forward it only goes about 1/4 throttle, even with the throttle lever in the WOT position it only runs at 1/4 speed and won't rev up. Is this a carb problem or somthing else? Ive looked in the manual and checked/adjusted the cables to where they should be and that still didn't solve it. I've checked the fuel pump and replaced the fuel lines as well. Spark plugs are new as well. I just can't figure out why it will run and rev up just fine in reverse, but not in forward.

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

shaft conversion interchange

Maybe somone can help here!Bit long winded explanation but the information may help why I am asking the question!
I have a small ski boat - it can only fit a long shaft.Max recommended transom weight is 170kg.
I have a 2005 Johnson 115 V4 2 stroke (with "small gearcase") fitted.
Great motor but need a lttle more punch/torque for pulling out skiers but want to keep the revs down at ski speed.I can prop down to do the job but then motor over revs far too easily. After many props currently running a 20" raker with slightly enlarged vent holes.Motor mounted 3" up now.
After many different propellors -high 5,4 blade,3 blade, propulse - all at various mounting heights I believe I have the best available compromise.
I have an oprtunity to buy a Johnson 2005 150 V6 but it is an extra long shaft. This is the lightest V6 made and is just under the transom max weight - in long shaft that is.Due to needing to keep height down (V6 is obviously taller by 3" than the V4)I have to run this at long shaft only.
The V6 has the "larger gearcase" 4 1/2" and the V4 comes as either small 4" or larger case also so I believe they are interchangable and there fore the bolt patterns and lower sections are the same.
It "looks" like the small lower section of the midsection and the outboard bracket "stem" are the only external difference. The internal driveshaft length would be different of course.
So...heres the question....if I have the two motors side by side can I swap out the lower midsections ,stem and drive shaft and end up with a long shaft V6 with the larger gearcase and an extra long V4???
The extra long 115 V4 will then be easier to on-sell and I cannot find a long 150 V6 to date! Plus all the guages and wiring harness and cables is the same so should just plug in without having to change over.
I presume there will be some gaskets required but it looks like a bolt on conversion to me.?????

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair

VRO no oil alarm. 1999 250 Hp Johnson Ocean Pro
I can't get an alarm after removing oil supply from VRO pump. I followed the shop manual instructions and put a jumper between the tan and black wire. Turned key on, system went through its auto check OK. No oil light stayed on. This indicates that the wiring is ok at least for the 2 wirres involved in this check out procedure. Now my question is--what should the reading be on the gray wire with motor runing? I have 12 VDC to the pump on purple wire with key on.

Forum: General

I have an 07, 250 Etec. After I've ran it for a while and tilt the motor up for trailering, a small pool of oil drips from the front of the motor.

I run a pair of 2004 250's on a 97 Hydra Sport CC. Am presently running older offshore gear cases, turning 3 blade 19inch Vipers. Cruise is 4200rpm at 35 knots (2.1 mpg) with wot hitting 6100 and 49-50 knots.

Is there any advantage in running the magnum gear case that were original equipment with these engines. Is the gear ratio the same? Could I turn bigger wheels with the newer gears. Are they standard on e-tecs?

Also are there any updates I can or need to perform on these engines. 500hrs on engines. Do you recommend iridium plugs? Newer model thermostats, pop off valves, etc. These are strong and econmical engines and I want them to last.

Forum: Technical Help Questions, Problems, Repair
